About

“Rust Never Sleeps” is the alias of 38-year-old York, England, resident Steve Bradley. Steve is a mature student of Social Policy at the University of York. Steve took the name “Rust Never Sleeps” not for the comfort of anonymity, but quite simply because he thought it was a great sentiment, and also because it happens to be the title of a 1978 album by one of his favourite musicians, Neil Young, therefore the name fitted the bill perfectly. This blog is not, despite accusations to the contrary, affiliated to, or in favour of, any political party. Steve is not a member of any political organisation and has often expressed his dissatisfaction and disillusionment with politicians of all parties. He is particularly opposed to party politics in local government and favours a system where councils are not run to any political agenda and do exactly what they are designed to do, which is to represent the best interests of local people.

Steve is also a vocal opponent of political correctness, and campaigns for freedom of speech to be allowed in all aspects of life. He feels that even the most odious of views should be able to be expressed without fear or suppression; as he feels that by not allowing certain groups the privilege of free speech that they could be forced underground and become far more dangerous to society than they can be while in the public domain.

As well as being a student and blogger, Steve is a budding writer and is currently working on his first novel. He is a huge fan of The Who and Neil Young and, as if to demonstrate his sense of humour, is a lifelong Leeds United fan. Steve also enjoys films and theatre and is currently working on improving his cooking skills and appreciation of wine. He owns two lurcher dogs and is a pretty dab hand with a pool cue, winning over 100 trophies in the north of England, as well as being a former professional drummer - once appearing at Reading Festival in front of 60,000 people while guesting on percussion for local rock legends Shed Seven. This blog first appeared in October 2006 on the York Press website and quickly attracted a regular and loyal readership, not all of whom shared the often controversial sentiments expressed by Steve. One particular blog post which was very critical of animal rights activists drew 124 comments and stimulated a heated online argument. Unfortunately the marriage between The Press and Steve was to be a rocky one that ultimately ended in divorce in February 2008 after his blog was removed after it became clear that Steve could not work under the constraints placed on him by deputy editor William Hearld, who alleged that he was inundated with complaints about Steve’s articles. Steve himself doubts this to be the truth behind the ban. You can find his own theories by searching this blog’s archive.

Steve’s ambitions are to get his book published, to make a living from writing and be able to retire early and move to the Greek island of Rhodes for a long and happy retirement. Failing that he will settle for a well paid job as a policy analyst or similar and open a lurcher rescue centre in the countryside.
